Green Recovery Inquiry

Glad that I was able to contribute to the Green Recovery Inquiry yesterday in Parliament. It’s vital that our response to the economic crisis and the climate emergency involves bold action to deliver a more equal society as we recover from the pandemic. That means applying a holistic approach to procurement, shifting away from the sole focus on low costs to consideration of fiscal, social and environmental costs & benefits. Labour led North Ayrshire Council is an excellent example political leadership using public sector procurement to improve the social, environmental and economic wellbeing in their communities. Last month they approved proposals for a council-owned solar farm that will generate 34%of the council’s (pre-Covid) energy needs and provide a financial surplus of almost £13 million, which will be reinvested in North Ayrshire. Edinburgh Labour councillors were key in setting up the Edinburgh Solar Coop which now generates renewable electricity & local benefits – now we need to see projects developed in every community across Scotland learning from that success
