Joint Letter to the First Minister Calling for our Rail Passenger Services to Be Taken Into Public Ownership

In April 2020 and given the unprecedented decline in passenger numbers, the Scottish Government allocated a six-month funding to allow ScotRail to continue to operate. This emergency funding agreement has been extended until January 2021 – what will happen after this period, it’s for the Scottish Government to decide.

That’s why I’ve signed this joint letter to the First Minister calling for our rail passenger services to be taken into public ownership. During the pandemic, Scottish taxpayers helped ScotRail survive, ensuring that railways remain open for all those who need them. However, private companies still control our rail network and stand to profit – the SNP Government has the power to change that and needs to act now.

High-quality, affordable and accessible public transport is not only fair for the people who rely on our trains, but a sustainable investment for the future of Scotland.
